Some time ago brushes in Russia were produced with tin ferrules. Billets from tin were rolled and the joint was soldered. Soon the place of the joint became leaden-coloured. When water got on the ferrule, its edges became rusty. Such ferrules often cracked when being crimped. The form of the tuft was not roundish because of the overcloak. The time passed and now we have got better kinds of ferrules.
We use two kinds of them: white brass ferrules and yellow aluminum ferrules. Brushes with yellow ferrules have a shorter length-out. Besides, brushes with yellow ferrules are made from coarser kind of hair. An artist takes a brush with a yellow ferrule if he will work with oil paints. Working with water-colors and other liquid paints he chooses a brush with a white one.
